Chinese New Year Lantern Festival 2019
Sydney’s biggest Chinese Community event is celebrating its 5th Anniversary with the most spectacular Chinese lantern display ever seen in Australia. Staged at Darling Harbour from February 13th to the 17th 2019, the Festival welcomes in the Chinese New Year of the Pig.
The 2019 Official Chinese New Year Lantern Festival features as its centrepiece a Great Wall of China lantern display which will span across Darling Harbour’s Tumbalong Park. At a total 30 metres in length, with an entrance gate that stands almost three stories in height, it will be one of the largest ever single Chinese lanterns constructed outside of China.
Year of the Pig is one of the most auspicious in the Chinese Zodiac. It will see hundreds of lanterns, illuminated by more than two thousand individual lights, adorning Darling Harbour’s Tumbalong Park. In total the lighting installations will cover more than 9,000 square metres.
Performances of traditional Chinese dance, music, acrobatics and martial arts will once again feature prominently, with the biggest ever troupe of performers joining the 2019 festival. In all there will be 200 individual artists performing across multiple stages, with shows running from 12:00pm until 9:00pm.
An innovation for 2019 will be a greatly expanded Chinese Lantern Food & Noodle Fair. Twenty stalls offering a host of Chinese and Asian cuisines, will open up onto a Chinese-themed Lantern Beer Garden offering refreshment from afternoons until the early evening. There will be dedicated seating for visitors to sit back, relax and enjoy the view with a cold beverage or spicy noodle dish.
